Briggs and Stratton LO 206 Break In Procedure

Posted by Agan Motorsports on Apr 13th 2026

This Briggs and Stratton LO206 Break In Procedure was supplied by Agan Motorsports.  Use this engine tuning document as a guide.  If you are using an engine builder for your Briggs 206 Engine program, please consult them first.

The Briggs and Stratton L.O. ( Local Option 206 ) is a Spec Racing Engine for kart racing applications.  The ruleset for Briggs can be found here, https://www.briggsracing.com/racing-engines/206.

Always double check with your race series for updates or revisions on any rules or specifications.

Agan Motorsports recommends the use of Amsoil 4T.

  • Fill the engine with a mininum of 14 oz. of Amsoil 4T, and no more than 16 oz.
  • Invert engine and rotate to manually coat the internals of the engine before installing on the chassis.
  • Remove spark plug from cylinder head and connect back to the spark plug cap and ground to the engine.
  • Pull start the engine to prime the fuel pump and the carburetor ( spark plug must be grounded to case )
  • Double check fuel pump is pulling fuel from the gas tank and supplying the carburetor
  • Install spark plug into cylinder head
  • Choke On carburetor ( lever up ) until engine tries to fire, then put choke in off position ( lever down )
  • Start engine and run at 2,000 RPM for 10 minutes, blipping the throttle to increase RPM's every 15 seconds.  DO NOT EXCEED 4,000 RPM's during this period
  • Turn engine off with kill switch and pull engine cable until the engine is at Top Dead Center.  You will feel the valves seat and higher compression
  • Double check your chain and engine mounts before track break in period
  • The first track run needs to be on a 60 degree - 80 degree day
  • First On Track 10 Lap Session, do not exceed 5,000 RPM's
  • Turn engine off with kill switch and pull engine cable until the engine is at Top Dead Center.  You will feel the valves seat and higher compression
  • Exit the track and drain the oil while it is hot.  You will need to measure the oil to ensure you have the same amount you started with ( 14 oz - 16 oz )
  • Refill Oil

After the engine is broken in, change the oil every 80-100 laps of track time, or once per day, which ever is least.  Always drain the oil when the engine is hot.

Agan Motorsports recommends an engine service by them every 4-5 track weekends

If the engine will sit for longer than a few days, drain the fuel system completely from the gas tank pick up lines, to the carburetor.  After fuel is removed, spray WD-40 through the fuel pump, the fuel line between the pump and carburetor, and into the carburetor.

This will help minimize corrosion and bad fuel from damaging the fuel system parts
